Datacamp vs Codecademy Pro– Mode of Learning
Now let’s see what learning method both DataCamp and Codecademy use-
Datacamp-
DataCamp provides video-based courses. You have to finish the video lecture and then you can move to the exercises. DataCamp provides a mobile application so that you can learn anytime and anywhere from your smartphone.
DataCamp provides separate courses as well as Career Tracks and Skill Tracks.
Career Tracks are a group of courses specially designed for various Data Science roles such as Data Scientist, Data Engineer, Data Analyst, and Machine Learning Scientist.
Skill Tracks are approximately similar to career tracks but with different intent. In the skill track, you will get a sequence of courses with hands-on-keyboard exercises to master a specific skill set such as Text Mining, Data Manipulation, Data Visualization, etc.
Codecademy-
Codecademy offers text-based tutorials with three column interface- Documentation, a code editor, and a virtual browser. Something like this-
In this interface, you can learn from the text-based tutorial, and then write code in the code editor. The browser automatically checks your code, if it is correct, the browser approves the code. And then you can move to the next chapter.
Codecademy also has a Career Path for different roles such as Data Scientist, Machine Learning engineer, etc. This career path is a group of lessons, where you will learn the skills and work on different projects. After completing the complete career path, you will get a certificate of completion.
Who is a Winner?
I personally love DataCamp in terms of mode of learning. Because DataCamp offers more interactive courses in form of videos.
Datacamp vs Codecademy Pro– Time Commitment
Both platforms are self-paced. You can learn according to your comfort. Now let’s see how much time is needed for DataCamp and Codecademy?
Datacamp-
DataCamp provides 14 career tracks that range from 62-115 hours. And their skill tracks takes around 10-30 hours.
Codecademy-
Codecademy data science career path takes around 35 weeks to complete. Codecademy takes a bit longer time than Datacamp to complete the course.
Datacamp vs Codecademy Pro– Instructors
In DataCamp, there are instructors from various institutions and universities. These instructors will teach you via video lectures.
Whereas in Codecademy, there are no instructors. You have to read the documentation, and then code. As a beginner, it’s quite difficult to learn coding without any instructors.
That’s why in terms of instructors, I like DataCamp. Because there are instructors who teach you and explains each topic clearly.
Who is a Winner?
DataCamp is a clear winner because DataCamp provides enough information about instructors. Whereas in Codecademy only limited information is available about who created the course.
Datacamp vs Codecademy Pro– Community
Community plays an important role in clearing doubts. And both DataCamp and Codecademy have their own community. You can discuss your doubts with other peers in the community.
Datacamp-
In the DataCamp community, you can discuss with peers, along with this, there is a curated list of data science news and articles available from experts.
You can check DataCamp community here. DataCamp community offers 24/7 support to the users.
Codecademy-
In the Codecademy community, you can also take help from other learners. You will also get an FAQ for each course so that you can find your own query or doubt in the FAQ section of the course.
Who is a Winner?
Both platforms have good community support. So according to me, both are winners in terms of community support.
Datacamp vs Codecademy Pro– Who Should Enroll?
Now let’s see who should go for DataCamp and who should go for Codecademy?
Datacamp-
DataCamp is the perfect choice for Data Science enthusiasts. Because DataCamp has 14 career tracks and 51 skill tracks. If you want to learn Python, R, and SQL, then DataCamp is better than Codecademy.
Good For- Data Science, Python, R, and SQL.
Codecademy-
Codecademy is suitable for those who want to learn other programming languages such as Ruby, Java, C++, JavaScript, CSS, HTML, etc. So if you want to learn these languages, then go with Codecademy instead of Datacamp.
Datacamp vs Codecademy Pro– Pros & Cons
Now let’s see pros and cons of both platforms-
Datacamp Pros-
Best for Beginners-
DataCamp is the perfect platform for data science beginners who want to learn data science from zero to advanced level.
2. Provides Valuable Content–
DataCamp provides quality content in form of video lectures and exercises. You can say that DataCamp provides value for money
3. Easy to Navigate-
In Datacamp you can easily search sections like Career Track, courses, etc due to its interactive design.
4. Experienced Experts-
In DataCamp Community, there are around 270+ experts available. You can ask your doubts with them.
5. Clear Pricing Plan-
DataCamp has transparent pricing plans. They clearly mention their plans and what they offer in the plan. This feature is pretty good because lots of platforms don’t have clear pricing plans.
6. Wide Range of Courses
DataCamp has something for everyone. There are different range of courses from beginners to advance level.
Datacamp Cons-
1. Less content in Free Plan-
DataCamp offers the first chapter of each course free. Which I think insufficient. In order to complete the full course, you have to upgrade your account.
2. No Accredited Certificate–
DataCamp doesn’t offer official accreditation. They only provide a Statement of Accomplishment. So if you are looking for an official certificate, then it’s better to go with Coursera or edX. But what you learned on DataCamp is more valuable than the certificate.
Codecademy Pros-
1. Free Courses-
In Codecademy, you can learn coding with various free courses. Codecademy has interactive lessons and practices from where you can learn.
2. Wide Variety-
Codecademy covers a wide range of programming languages such as HTML/CSS, JavaScript, Ruby, jQuery.
3. Supportive Community-
Codecademy has a strong and supportive community with coaches, advisors, or other graduates to help answer any questions and doubts you may have.
Codecademy Cons-
1. No Instructor Bio-
Codecademy doesn’t provide enough information about instructors. Only limited information is available about who created the course.
2. Can’t Skip Lesson-
The thing which I don’t like about Codecademy is you can’t skip the next lesson without completing the previous one. It becomes irritating sometimes because if you already know the topic and don’t want to re-learn it. And also you can’t revisit the lesson which you have done previously. This is also sometimes irritating.
3. Lack of Quality Projects-
Like in DataCamp, there are various quality projects available. But in Codecademy, you can learn the basics and syntax. Codecademy doesn’t provide quality projects.
4. Not Accredited–
Codecademy only provides a certificate of completion. But it is not accredited. If you are looking for accreditation, then it’s good to check Coursera and edX.
Conclusion-
As we saw that both platforms offer good quality content. But DataCamp beat Codecademy in various aspects.
So I would suggest, If you are a data science learner( Python, R, SQL), then start learning on DataCamp. But if you want to learn other programming languages (HTML/CSS, JavaScript, Ruby, jQuery.), then learn on Codecademy.
