So, you are fresher and looking for an entry-level Data Science Job, but you are not getting an interview call. This is a very common problem every data science fresher is facing. Getting a Data Science job as a fresher requires some extra effort. That’s why I am gonna discuss 9 Proven Strategies to get entry-level data science job. If you follow these strategies then definitely you will get entry-level data science jobs.
9 Strategies to get Entry Level Data Science Job
So, if you are a college graduate and looking for a data science job, then you should follow these 9 Strategies to get entry–level data science job. These strategies will help you to get your first job as a data scientist.
So, let’s get started-
1. Complete Learning Phase
Get in-depth knowledge of data science concepts. You can learn Data Science concepts by yourself or by online courses. It’s up to you. Either you can enroll yourself in any good online course that will provide complete knowledge or you can learn by yourself.
If you are looking for data science online courses, then read this article-Best Online Courses for Data Science to become A Skilled Data Scientist
In the learning phase, get in-depth knowledge of the Data Science tool, programming languages, statistical knowledge, and analytical skills.
I have already written an article on the best way to learn data science for a complete beginner. You can check out if you didn’t complete the learning part yet. Once you complete the learning part, then you need to follow these strategies-
2. Take Part in Kaggle Competition
It is very difficult for fresher to get a direct data science job in a company until and unless you are from a very prime institute. So if you are from tier 2 or tier 3 college, then you need to put extra efforts and solve a lot of Kaggle competitions.
So, once you gathered enough data science knowledge, start preparing for Kaggle competitions. And try to get a rank between 1-100. If you get a rank between 1-100 and put on your resume, then there is a high chance that you will get a call from companies and get internship opportunities or junior data science jobs in a company.
So once you get an internship or junior role job opportunity, later on, your stages will be easy to become a Data Scientist.
These are some Kaggle Competitions, in which you should participate-
- Titanic: Machine Learning from Disaster– Start with this competition. This Competition is good for the beginner.
- Predict Future Sales– This challenge serves as a final project for the “How to win a data science competition” Coursera course.
- House Prices: Advanced Regression Techniques– This is another beginner-friendly competition for those who have completed an online course in machine learning and are looking to expand their skill set before trying a featured competition.
- Digit Recognizer– This competition is for those who have knowledge of R or Python and machine learning basic, but new to computer vision.
The list is long, for more Kaggle Competitions, you can check here.
3. Build a Website
Having a website adds authenticity to your status as a tech person because data science is a tech position. But don’t use basic editors like Wix. I’d recommend doing it by yourself. You can create a website with Python.
The website create high chances that recruiters will contact you after seeing your website. You can mention your projects on your websites and write articles related to data science.
4. Make a Strong Resume
Nowadays, most of the companies are using Applicant Tracking System. So try to make a clean and simple resume so that computers can read it easily. This is the free website that tests how well your resume does with ATS.
Make two copies of resume, one for ATS and one that looks great and you can give to someone in person.
List all of your projects in your resume, better is to have URLs so that recruiters can click on to view online. At least put your 3 best projects in your resume.
In terms of skills, you need to be smart. That means suppose you have to apply for a job that listed the following skill on the top- “Knowledge of a variety of machine learning techniques”. So all you need to do is add this skill “Knowledge of a variety of machine learning techniques” on the top of your resume.
But…wait!
Do this step only when you really have a Knowledge of a variety of machine learning techniques. Because if you mention this skill on the top but in reality, you don’t have enough knowledge about machine learning techniques, then it will be embarrassing for you during the interview.
So, be honest in your resume, mention only those skills in which you have enough knowledge and you can answer on those topics during the interview.

5. Use Advanced Filters during Job Search
Most of the time, people just type “Data Science Jobs for Freshers” on google and start applying. But did you see half of the jobs are old? That’s why you should apply advanced filters before applying for a job.
Many Job Hunting site gives the feature of Filter like in Indeed, you can set the time for the job posting. Always set less time like 3 days or 7 days.
The Next tip is to eliminate job postings that ask for a lot of experience. Indeed provide Advanced Job Search feature in which you can set everything according to you.
You can add words like entry-level or junior in “with at least one of these words” section. And you can add words like Ph.D. or experience in the “With none of these words” section. By applying such kind of filter, you will get job postings according to you.
6. Don’t Only Rely on Jobs, Apply for Internships too
Sometimes after giving your full efforts, things will take time. So, if you don’t get an interview call for a data science job, don’t get disappointed. As a fresher, you just need an opportunity to enter into the data science field either by an entry-level job or by an internship.
That’s why also apply for internships related to data science. Getting an internship is easier as compared to a data science job for freshers. You can consider an internship as a one-step towards a data science job.
You will learn a lot during the internship and the Internship will add more value to your Resume. After successfully completing the internship, there would be a huge possibility that you will be hired with the same company, and if not then you can apply in other companies.
7. Reach out on LinkedIn
LinkedIn is a great place to reach out. But before reaching out make sure that your LinkedIn profile is up to date. Mention all your skills and certifications in your LinkedIn profile. If you have a website or any publication, don’t forget to add to your profile.
For reaching out, you can type “Data Scientist Hiring” in a search bar of LinkedIn and look for people instead of jobs. Only Reach out to those people who mention “Data Science” in their bio.
8. Improve Your Communication Skill
This is the skill many people ignore, but you should be a good communicator. Why? because data science is all about storytelling. You should be able to explain effectively how you came to a specific conclusion and how it can improve the business in a particular way.
During your interview, the interviewer will also judge you on your communication skills. So before going to an interview focus on technical skills as well as your communication skills.
You can improve your communication by attending data science meet-ups and Podcasts. Try to interact with people and discuss data science topics. By doing so, you will get 3 benefits– first, your communication will improve, second, you will be more confident in expressing your views on data science topics, third you will get a chance to meet people in the data science field.
9. Find Out Companies Pain Point
That means before going for an interview, get in-depth knowledge related to that company. Find out what problems they are facing and think about how you can solve their problems as data scientists. This is quite harder to do, but this trick will increase your chances to get hired.
Why?
Because the company is also looking for a person who solves their problems. So what you should do is prepare a document and note down the pain points the company has and ideas on how you can solve those specific pain points.
You should be very clear and detailed during expressing your ideas like resources you are going to use, the amount of time you think this is going to take, and the project outline you are going to work on.
So, if you successfully convince the interviewer that you are the best fit for this job role, then there is a high chance that you will get an offer letter.
That’s all…
These are the 9 Proven Strategies to get Entry Level Data Science Job that will help you to land in entry-level data science job. Now it’s time to wrap up.
Conclusion
I hope after reading this article, you are more confident and plan your job preparation in a more strategic way. Good things take time and effort, so if you follow these strategies and give time and effort, then definitely you will get a data science job as a fresher.
